Why traditional speaker training falls short
Most speaker training focuses on content, delivery and technique. But the body tells its own story.
Public speaking and high-stakes evaluation trigger measurable stress responses. Surveys consistently rank public speaking as a top fear, and social evaluative threats reliably activate the body’s stress response (Chapman University Survey of American Fears; Dickerson & Kemeny, 2004).
Stress impairs executive function and visible composure. Acute stress reduces working memory, decision-making capacity, verbal fluency and cognitive flexibility — all essential for leadership performance (Arnsten, 2009).
Physiological regulation drives visible performance. Heart rate variability and autonomic control are directly linked to composure and executive presence in evaluative environments (Laborde et al., 2017).
Leaders are often intellectually prepared, but physiology can betray them — influencing stakeholder perception and organizational credibility.
Chapman University Survey of American Fears (Annual). Fear of public speaking consistently ranks among the highest in the U.S.
